After Kite Festivals: How to Help an Injured Bird
Kite festivals often cause serious injuries to birds due to harsh manjha strings. Simple first aid can help save an injured bird until experts arrive.
January is a pleasant winter month with a nip in the air. It is also a festive time with celebrations like Lohri and Makar Sankranti. People enjoy flying kites and eating sweets made from rich ingredients that help keep the body warm in cold weather.
However, this festive season also brings a sad reality. Thousands of birds get injured every year because of harsh manjha strings used during kite flying. Many people feel bad when they see an injured bird but do not know what to do to help.
Here is a simple first-aid method you can follow until a bird rescue team or expert arrives.
Hold the bird gently and make sure it is facing you. Carefully hold both wings without applying pressure. Slowly move the legs down and lock them with one hand. This will help keep the bird safe and steady.
An injured bird is usually very scared. Try to calm it down. For pigeons only, you may gently pat the head to comfort them.
If possible, wear gloves. Open each wing slowly and check for injuries. If there is bleeding, apply Cipladine powder. If it is not available, turmeric powder can be used. Tea or coffee powder can also help. Grind the powder well before applying it to the wound.
Gently press the injured area, close the wing, and then place the bird inside a box. Keep a bowl of food and water inside. Ensure the box has holes for air.
Place the box in a dark, quiet, and peaceful corner. The bird may move inside, which is normal.
Contact local bird rescue NGOs or veterinary doctors for proper treatment.
