50-Year-Old Building Collapses in Delhi: 7 Dead

A 50-year-old student hostel in Delhi’s Satya Niketan collapsed during ongoing renovation work, killing seven people and injuring several others.

A nearly 50-year-old building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan was turned into a student hostel earlier this year. But on 6 September 2026, it collapsed within seconds, trapping students and workers under the rubble.

The five-storey building, Hostel Daze, was located near Delhi University’s South Campus and had around 30 rooms.

Students had started moving in by August, even though renovation work was still underway.

At the time of the collapse, workers were carrying out construction in the basement, including removing a wall. Delhi had also received two days of heavy rain, causing water to collect in the basement.

At around 1:30 pm on Sunday, the building suddenly gave way.

With many students inside, around 50 people were believed to be in the building. Some trapped victims managed to call for help from beneath the debris.

Rescue teams recovered 11 people, including two labourers. By 7 September, six people had died, including students and a labourer.

Police have registered a case against the owner, Hari Ram Bansal, and are investigating the renovation and construction work.

Authorities are examining several possible factors, including the building’s age, ongoing basement construction, heavy rain and waterlogging, to determine what caused the deadly collapse.
