Bangladesh: Hindu Widow Woman Gang-raped And Tied to Tree

A Hindu widow in Bangladesh was brutally raped, tortured, and humiliated by two men who later circulated a video of the attack.

Violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh continues to rise, and another disturbing case has shocked the country.
A 40-year-old Hindu widow from Kaliganj, Jhenaidah, was gang-raped, tortured, tied to a tree, and had her hair cut off by two men named Shahin and Hasan.

The woman had bought a piece of land and a two-storey house from Shahin and his brother two and a half years ago. However, Shahin soon began harassing her and making indecent proposals. On 3 January 2026, when two relatives from her village were visiting her home, Shahin and Hasan forcibly entered the house and raped her.

They then demanded 50,000 taka, and when she refused, they attacked her relatives and forced them out. As the woman screamed for help, the men tied her to a tree, cut off her hair, recorded the attack, and circulated the video on social media. She lost consciousness after being tortured.

Neighbours later rescued her and admitted her to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, where doctors confirmed the abuse. She filed a complaint at Kaliganj Police Station, and both accused men were arrested. ASP Billal Hossain stated that the police will ensure the strongest legal action.

This case is part of a disturbing pattern. In recent weeks, several Hindus in Bangladesh  including Dipu Chandra Das, Amrit Mondal, Khokon Chandra Das, and journalist Rana Pratap have been attacked or killed.

Bangladesh’s Hindu population has dropped from 22% in 1971 to just 8% today, showing the growing threat faced by the community. Another recent viral video shows a homeless woman tied to an electric pole and drenched with water in cold weather, raising more concerns about rising extremism under Muhammad Yunus’ interim government.
