British-Indian Care Home Manager Jailed in Scotland for Rape and Sexual Assault

A nurse manager in Scotland was jailed for abusing colleagues at a care home. The case highlights misuse of power and the importance of international justice.

A British nurse of Indian origin, Naijil Paul, in his 40s, has been sentenced to seven years and nine months in prison in Scotland for raping one colleague and sexually assaulting two others. The crimes took place at a care home where he worked as a nurse and manager.

The case shocked staff, families, and the public because the abuse happened in a place meant to be safe and caring. The incidents began in 2018 at a care home in North Lanarkshire, near Glasgow. As a manager, Paul had control over staff duties, schedules, and evaluations, giving him significant authority.

One young nurse told police that during a night shift, Paul forced himself on her. She stayed silent for some time because she was afraid of losing her job. As investigations continued, two more women came forward. They said Paul touched them in unwanted sexual ways during work hours. Both women explained that his position made them feel trapped and unable to report the abuse.

Police collected strong evidence, including CCTV footage, staff shift records, and witness statements. Paul denied the accusations and claimed the women were lying. Before the trial began in December 2019, he left the UK and travelled to Kerala, India, saying his father was unwell. He was later declared a fugitive.

After years of extradition efforts, Paul was arrested in Kerala in 2025 and returned to Scotland. He pleaded guilty to all charges. The court sentenced him in December 2025, placed him on the sex offenders register for life, and banned him from approaching the victims.
