Cape Verde’s Historic FIFA Journey Overshadowed by Captain’s Rape Allegation
Cape Verde's historic first-ever FIFA World Cup run has been overshadowed by sexual assault allegations against team captain Ryan Mendes, who is under investigation in New Zealand.
Cape Verde, a small African island nation with a population of just 5.6 lakh, became one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Playing in their first-ever World Cup, they held Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia to draws and made history by reaching the knockout stage.
In the Round of 32, Cape Verde pushed defending champions Argentina to extra time before losing 3-2, earning admiration from football fans around the world. When the team returned home on 5 July, thousands of supporters gathered to celebrate what many called the greatest achievement in the country's football history.
However, the celebrations were soon overshadowed by serious allegations against team captain Ryan Mendes.
A Brazilian interpreter, hired by the New Zealand Football Federation during Cape Verde's friendly matches in Auckland in March 2026, has accused Mendes of entering her hotel room without permission and sexually assaulting her.
The woman reported the incident to New Zealand Police in April, and an investigation is ongoing. The allegations became public in late June, drawing global attention and casting a shadow over Cape Verde's historic World Cup journey.
Ryan Mendes has not been charged with any offence, and no court has found him guilty. FIFA has said it is aware of the allegations and remains in contact with New Zealand authorities.
