Deadly Fire in New Delhi Hotel: Kills 21, Including Foreigners
A devastating fire at a guest house in Delhi's Malviya Nagar claimed 21 lives, while local residents helped save several trapped guests amid the chaos.
A routine morning in Delhi's Malviya Nagar turned into a nightmare on June 3 when a massive fire engulfed Flourish Stays B&B, claiming 21 lives and injuring 26 others.
The blaze reportedly began in the basement kitchen and rapidly spread through the five-storey building, trapping dozens of guests inside. With only one entry and exit point, evacuation became extremely difficult.
As smoke filled the building, local residents stepped in to help.
Mattress shop owner Riyazuddin Mansuri and his son Armaan spread mattresses on the road below, creating a cushion for guests forced to jump from windows—an act that helped save eight lives.
More than 40 people were rescued as firefighters, police, and disaster response teams battled the flames. Several of those who died were foreign nationals visiting Delhi for medical treatment.
Investigators are now examining possible fire safety and licensing violations, as the building reportedly operated far beyond the room limit permitted for a bed-and-breakfast establishment.
Following the tragedy, police registered an FIR, detained the property's owner, and authorities launched a city-wide crackdown on illegal guest houses and buildings flouting safety norms.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced compensation for the victims and their families.
