India Government to Suspend Farm Laws for 1.5 Years

The Indian government on 20th January 2020, proposed to suspend the 3 farm laws for one and a half year. However, the farmers did not immediately accept the government’s proposal.

The Indian government on 20th January 2020, proposed to suspend the 3 farm laws for one and a half year. At the 10th round of meetings between the government and farmer leaders, the government even set up a joint committee to discuss the laws. However, the farmers did not immediately accept the government’s proposal. Farmer leaders have said they will have an internal discussion on 21st Jan and then revert back with an answer. The leaders said they want a complete removal of the laws but they will discuss the government’s proposal.  A farmer leader named Kavitha Kuruganti said the government has even proposed to submit an affidavit in the Supreme Court to suspend the farm laws. 

The Union Agriculture Minister said that it is hopeful to reach a solution with the farmers. The next meeting between the farmers and the government is on 22nd Jan.
