India has made the wearing of face masks mandatory when people leave their homes. Places like Delhi, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh have made it compulsory to wear masks. Any person seen without a mask will be strictly punished. Crores of people in these areas have to wear masks. The Indian government made this decision even though the World Health Organisation on its website has said that “if you are healthy you do not need to wear a mask. You only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected [Covid-19] infection, or if you are showing symptoms of the disease yourself.

Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO health emergencies programme, said that the WHO strongly believe that there is no proof that wearing masks by the mass population has any benefit. He also said if everyone starts buying and wearing masks, this will lead to a major shortage for doctors, nurses, police, etc who are working to contain COVID-19.In India there has been a lot of news about doctors and nurses saying there is a major shortage of masks.

Now the government has said people can even use home made cloth masks as they are very effective.

Experts say that in developed countries across the world, social distancing is easy and masks may not be necessary. But in India due to the large population and people living in close quarters masks are very useful to help people to protect themselves from infections.
