J&K Statehood Protest: Omar Abdullah Joins Demonstration in Delhi
Jammu & Kashmir National Conference leaders, led by Omar Abdullah, protested in Delhi demanding the restoration of Jammu & Kashmir's statehood.
While the nationwide CJP protest was taking place on 20 July, another major protest unfolded at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
Leaders of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, travelled by auto-rickshaw after heavy traffic blocked the roads. They gathered to demand the restoration of Jammu & Kashmir's statehood.
Before 5 August 2019, Jammu & Kashmir enjoyed special status under Article 370, with its own Constitution, flag, and greater powers to make its own laws.
After Article 370 was revoked, the state lost its special status and was split into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
At the protest, Farooq Abdullah and other National Conference leaders urged the Central Government to honour its earlier promise to restore statehood. The party said it would continue protesting until the demand is fulfilled.
Meanwhile, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) criticised the protest, saying that restoring statehood alone is not enough and that the demand should also include the restoration of Article 370.
