Azerbaijan Schools Restrict Hijab-Wearing Students

Schools in Azerbaijan have reportedly denied entry to some students and teachers wearing hijabs following the introduction of school clothing rules. Although the rules do not specifically name the hijab, they prohibit clothing considered inconsistent with the country’s secular principles. The restrictions have sparked protests and concerns about religious freedom and access to education.

Azerbaijan’s Interior Ministry said 37 people were detained in Baku on 12 October amid protests. Amnesty International has called for the restrictions to be reversed and for people detained solely for peaceful protest to be released.

Ankita Bhandari Case: Parents Demand Justice

In 2022, 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari, a receptionist at a resort in Uttarakhand, was murdered. In May 2025, resort owner Pulkit Arya and two employees were sentenced to life imprisonment for her murder. However, Ankita’s parents continue to demand a CBI investigation into an alleged VIP connection and whether others were involved. They have named BJP leader Dushyant Kumar Gautam in their allegations. Gautam has denied the allegations.

After Gautam was appointed Governor of Sikkim in October 2026, Ankita’s parents protested near India Gate in New Delhi, demanding that the appointment be put on hold until the investigation is complete. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met the family during the protest. Police detained the protesters, who were later released.
