PM Modi Meets Iran President Pezeshkian: Iran Asks For India’s Help

PM Modi attended the SCO Summit, where Iran’s President asked India to help stop the ongoing war and rising tensions in the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on 1 September. The SCO includes India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus.

At the summit, PM Modi called for stronger action against terrorism, including terrorist financing, recruitment and radicalisation. He also supported the proposed SCO Civilizational Dialogue Forum, whose first session is planned in India.

Before the summit, Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on 31 August. This was their first in-person meeting since the US-Israel-Iran conflict began in February 2026. Modi expressed concern over the rising tensions and said disputes should be solved through dialogue and diplomacy.

During the meeting, Pezeshkian asked India to use its international relations to help stop the war. The two leaders also discussed the Strait of Hormuz, Chabahar Port, trade and other areas of cooperation.

The meeting has raised questions about earlier US-Iran peace talks in Islamabad. Despite those talks, Iran is now asking India for help, raising doubts about how successful those negotiations were.

Another major highlight was Modi standing alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the SCO Summit. Some US media reports questioned whether the meeting showed closer cooperation between India, Russia and China against Western influence.
