PM Modi Visits Manipur After Two Years of Violence

In May 2023, violence broke out in Manipur between the Meitei people and the Kuki-Zo tribes. The Meiteis wanted Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for benefits, but the Kuki-Zo groups opposed it, fearing loss of land and rights. The clashes quickly turned violent, leading to burned homes, destroyed temples and churches, and thousands displaced.

By the end of 2024, more than 250 people had died, and nearly 60,000 were forced into relief camps. Many blamed Chief Minister N. Biren Singh for not controlling the crisis. He resigned in February 2025, and President’s rule was imposed.

On 13th September 2025, after more than two years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Manipur for the first time. The visit took place under heavy security due to death threat rumours. Despite heavy rains, locals came out, showing their emotions — from offering traditional shawls to giving hand-drawn portraits.

PM Modi visited relief camps, met survivors, and appealed to both communities to stop the violence. He also launched projects worth over ?8,500 crore to rebuild Manipur, including 7,000 permanent homes, improved infrastructure, healthcare, education, and peacebuilding programs.

While some welcomed his visit and expressed hope, others felt it came too late. Critics also questioned the timing, with elections in North Eastern states in 2026, calling the visit politically motivated.

PM Modi said: “What happened in Manipur is painful. We cannot change the past, but we must build a peaceful future.”
