Shocking: Bata Is Not an Indian Brand!

Bata, a global brand, has become India’s most trusted footwear name since 1931. With 1,962 stores Bata continues to deliver affordable, stylish shoes loved by millions

Bata is one of the most trusted footwear brands in India, known especially for its school shoes and durable daily wear. While many believe Bata is an Indian brand, it actually started in the Czech Republic in 1894 when Tomas Bata and his siblings began making simple, affordable canvas shoes. Today, Bata is headquartered in Switzerland but has become a household name in India.

By 1912, Bata had over 600 workers and expanded globally after World War I by cutting shoe prices in half. In 1931, Bata entered India, opening its first store in Kolkata and a factory in Konnar the following year. The demand was so high that the township became known as Batanagar. By 1939, Bata employed nearly 4,000 workers and sold 3,500 shoes weekly.

Bata understood Indian needs and launched rubber sandals, chappals, and flip-flops, which remain popular today. In 1973, it became a publicly traded company in India, becoming a reliable choice for schoolchildren and working people alike.

From 2013, Bata worked to modernize, launching fashionable designs to attract younger customers. By 2025, it operates in 90+ countries with 5,300+ outlets, while Bata India runs 1,962 stores across 1,590 towns, including sneaker studios. It sold 46.38 million pairs in FY 2024-25, supported by e-commerce through Zepto and Swiggy Instamart.

With brand ambassadors Kriti Sanon, Smriti Mandhana, and Sara Ali Khan, Bata continues to blend style, comfort, and affordability.
