Tripura Police Officer’s Body Found Hanging in His Headquarter’s Washroom
Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar was found dead at his office, and police have launched an investigation into the case.
Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, 60, was found dead at the Police Headquarters in Agartala on 21 July 2026.
Concern arose after officers were unable to contact him inside his office. Around noon, police broke open the locked washroom attached to his chamber and found him hanging inside. He was immediately taken to Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital.
Doctors said he was brought to the hospital without a pulse or blood pressure. Despite CPR and efforts by a team of doctors, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 12:48 p.m.
Some early reports claimed that he died using his service weapon. However, officials have not confirmed this. According to the police, he was found hanging, and the exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem examination.
Tripura Police have started an investigation. A committee of senior police officers has been formed, and Dhankar's electronic devices will also be sent for forensic examination. If the post-mortem confirms suicide, investigators will try to find out what may have led to his death.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury questioned the circumstances of the incident and demanded a judicial inquiry. Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar paid tribute to Dhankar, calling him one of the finest police officers.
Anurag Dhankar had a distinguished career in the police service. He received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service. He also led the CBI investigation into the Nirav Modi bank fraud case and headed the Special Investigation Team that reinvestigated the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
He is survived by his wife and son, who lives in Canada. His funeral was held with full state honours in his hometown of Baraut, Uttar Pradesh, where police officers, government officials, family members, and local residents paid their final respects.
