On the night of 25–26 August 2025, a Ganesh procession in the Panigate–Manjalpur area of Vadodara was disrupted when unknown individuals threw eggs at a Ganesha idol and at the volunteers carrying it. Videos of the shocking act spread quickly on social media, causing outrage and sparking anger in the local community.
Vadodara Police moved swiftly to control the situation. Three suspects, including a minor, were detained, while two adults were formally arrested. Authorities later paraded the accused along the procession route and made them apologise in public. An FIR has been filed under sections related to hurting religious sentiments and defiling religious items.
Local leaders, residents, and Hindu organisations strongly condemned the incident. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) described it as a threat to the city’s peace and culture, demanding strict legal action.
Police Commissioner Narasimha Komar and Additional Police Commissioner Leena Patil assured the public that security has been tightened across procession routes. CCTV footage and witness statements are being examined to determine whether more people were involved or if the act was pre-planned.
Though the incident shocked the city, swift police response and public unity have helped calm tensions and maintain peace during the festival season.
