Veteran Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani, known to everyone simply as Asrani, passed away on 20 October 2025 in Mumbai. He was 84 years old. Reports say he had been unwell for some time and had breathing problems because of fluid in his lungs. He was taken to the hospital but did not recover. His funeral took place the same day at Santacruz Crematorium, with only close family and friends in attendance.
Asrani was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and studied at FTII, Pune before beginning his film journey. He worked in over 350 films in Hindi and Gujarati cinema and became one of India’s most loved character actors. People remember his comic timing, warm smile, and his iconic role as the funny jailer in the classic movie Sholay. Over a career spanning 50 years, he acted with many top stars, spreading laughter and joy through his performances. He also directed a few films and appeared on TV shows.
