Ranga-Billa Case: What Happened to Geeta and Sanjay Chopra?

The Ranga-Billa case, one of India's most infamous crimes, saw brave siblings Geeta and Sanjay Chopra fight their kidnappers, helping police eventually bring the killers to justice.

The Ranga-Billa case remains one of India's most horrifying crimes. In August 1978, teenage siblings Geeta and Sanjay Chopra were kidnapped in Delhi while on their way to an All India Radio programme.

Despite several people witnessing the children struggling inside a car and alerting the police, delays and errors in the investigation allowed the kidnappers to escape.

Two days later, the bodies of Geeta and Sanjay were found in Delhi Ridge. Investigators eventually traced the crime to two criminals, Kuljeet Singh alias Ranga and Jasbir Singh alias Billa.

Forensic evidence, witness testimonies and the injuries suffered by the accused during the children's resistance helped police solve the case.

Ranga and Billa were convicted of kidnapping, rape and murder and were hanged in Tihar Jail in 1982.

The case shocked the nation, changed how many Indian families viewed children's safety and is remembered for the extraordinary courage shown by Geeta and Sanjay, who fought back until the very end.
