11-Year-Old Boy Killed After Tree Falls on School Bus in Mumbai

A school bus in Mumbai was hit by a fallen tree during heavy rain in Chembur, killing one student and injuring several others.

A tragic accident took place in Mumbai on 30 June 2026 at around 2:50 pm, when a Universal High School bus was taking students home after school on Road No. 11 in Chembur.

The bus was carrying around 18 students, most of them between 11 and 14 years of age.

While the bus was moving on the road, a large peepal tree suddenly got uprooted and fell on it.

The heavy branches damaged part of the bus roof, broke the windows, and trapped several children inside.

Local residents and the bus conductor rushed to help. A crane was also brought in to remove the fallen tree and rescue the trapped students.

Soon after, police, fire brigade, and other rescue teams reached the spot and started relief work.

Some children managed to come out of the bus on their own, while rescuers broke the windows to help the others escape safely.

In total, 12 students were rescued safely, while five were taken to hospital. An 11-year-old boy, Vihan Shrivastav, was declared dead on arrival.

Doctors later said that the other injured children were stable and their injuries were not life-threatening.

The incident took place during heavy monsoon rain.

Officials are now investigating the incident and looking into key questions such as whether the tree was already weak, whether complaints had been made earlier, and whether it should have been trimmed or removed before the monsoon.

The accident has raised concerns about old and weak roadside trees in Mumbai, especially near schools and busy roads used by school buses.

Many people are now demanding that authorities inspect and remove dangerous trees before such accidents happen again. The investigation is still going on.
