2 Hospital Fires: 3 Infants Die in Amravati, 3 Injured in MP
Three newborn babies died in a fire at Amravati District Women’s Hospital, just two days after a similar hospital fire in Madhya Pradesh killed another newborn.
Three newborn babies have died after a fire broke out at a government hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra, on 24 August 2026.
The fire started around 3:30 a.m. in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) on the hospital’s third floor. At the time, 39 babies were inside the unit.
The fire reportedly began in a section housing nine babies who had been transferred from other hospitals. Preliminary information suggests that a ventilator may have caught fire, but the exact cause is still being investigated.
Doctors, nurses and hospital staff immediately entered the room, disconnected medical equipment and rescued the babies. Six babies were taken out, but three died after suffering severe burns and smoke inhalation. The fire was brought under control within around 30 minutes, and the remaining 36 babies were moved to safety.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. The government has announced Rs.5 lakh compensation for each bereaved family and said action will be taken if anyone is found responsible.
The incident has also raised questions about fire safety and the placement of the SNCU on the third floor.
Shockingly, just two days earlier, a similar fire broke out at Chhindwara District Hospital in Madhya Pradesh. Thirty babies were rescued, but one newborn died and two were injured.
The two incidents have renewed concerns over fire safety, equipment maintenance and emergency preparedness in newborn care units.
