3 Women Attempt Suicide Within 4 Hours: 1 Rescued by Deaf Swimmer
3 women were rescued from two lakes in Nagpur within four hours, including a Deaf swimmer who helped save a 16-year-old girl with instructions from his coach in sign language.
Three women were rescued in three separate incidents at Futala and Ambazari lakes in Nagpur, Maharashtra, on 26 August. The incidents happened within around four hours, with local residents, police officers, swimmers and divers acting quickly to save them.
The second rescue was especially remarkable. Deaf swimmer Akshay Ravindra Nawale, from Shark Aquatics Sporting Association, helped save a 16-year-old girl from drowning at Ambazari Lake.
Akshay was at the lake with his coach Sanjay Batwe when they saw the girl in the water. His coach immediately gave him instructions through sign language. Akshay quickly swam towards the girl, while another swimmer, Ishan Pande, also entered the water. Together, they brought her safely back to the shore.
The girl's parents offered Akshay money as a reward, but he refused, saying that saving lives was his duty.
Earlier, at around 5 am, a 24-year-old woman was rescued at Futala Lake after an alert local man stopped her from entering the water and informed the police.
About 20 minutes after the Ambazari rescue, a 70-year-old woman was also stopped from entering the lake by alert residents, swimmers and divers. She was later reunited with her family.
The three incidents showed how quick action can save lives. Akshay's rescue also showed that being Deaf did not stop him from responding quickly and helping someone in danger.
