4 Youths Book Rapido Cab, Murder Driver for ‘Easy Money’
Delhi cab driver murdered during alleged robbery; three accused arrested within 24 hours, one still absconding.
On 23 July 2026, four youths in Delhi allegedly planned to rob a cab driver after drinking alcohol together. According to police, Aman, Ayan (20), Sahil (19), and a 17-year-old minor arranged a knife and used Ayan's phone to book a Rapido cab to V3S Mall.
The booking was accepted by 40-year-old Vijay Kumar, a cab driver from West Vinod Nagar in East Delhi. All four got into his Maruti WagonR as passengers.
When the cab reached a traffic signal in Krishna Nagar, the group allegedly attacked Vijay Kumar. Police said Sahil held the driver while Aman and Ayan attacked him with a knife, causing fatal injuries.
According to police, the minor then drove the cab for about 1.5 kilometres. Some reports say Vijay Kumar's body was moved to the back seat before the minor drove the vehicle away.
The minor later crashed the cab into another car. People nearby became suspicious and chased the vehicle. The four suspects abandoned the blood-stained car near East Azad Nagar Metro Station and ran away, leaving Vijay Kumar inside.
A passerby found Vijay Kumar and rushed him to Dr Hedgewar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The hospital informed the police, who registered a murder case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
During the investigation, police found Vijay Kumar's wallet, mobile phone and other belongings inside the car. Since nothing appeared to be stolen, investigators initially suspected that an argument with the passengers may have led to the crime.
Police later examined around 30 CCTV cameras, analysed the Rapido booking, checked call records, tracked mobile phone locations and used other technical evidence to identify the suspects.
Within 24 hours, police traced the accused to New Seelampur. Ayan, Sahil and the 17-year-old minor were arrested. Aman was identified as the fourth accused but managed to escape before police arrived. Raids are continuing to arrest him.
Police also said Ayan has four previous criminal cases, including robbery and snatching, while Sahil has one previous case of snatching.
Investigators recovered the knife believed to have been used in the attack, the blood-stained WagonR, the suspects' blood-stained clothes, the mobile phones used to plan the robbery and other important evidence.
Police said the case was solved within 24 hours using CCTV footage, call records and technical investigation. Further investigation is continuing, and efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused.
