Sandhu and his family also allegedly demanded Rs. 50 lakh from Kaur and her family to raise the daughters. Her father, Jaspal Singh also said that his daughter Mandeep  Kaur had shared a video of the abuse many years ago. They even filed a case in New York at that time, but she said she didn't want further action, her father said.

According to her brother, Sandhu's family "begged" Kaur to forgive him at that time. Listening to this, Kaur finally decided to forgive her husband. However, the harassment kept on going even after Mandeep Kaur took back her complaint. Kaur allegedly died by suicide on Wednesday 3rd of August.

In the video recorded minutes before her death, she said, "My husband and in-laws are responsible for my death. They didn't let me live. He has been beating me for the last eight years."
