BJP MP Calls for National Commission for Persons with Disabilities in Rajya Sabha
BJP MP Bhim Singh proposes a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities to strengthen policy, monitoring, and regional support for disability rights in India.
During the Rajya Sabha 'Special Mentions' on March 13, BJP MP Bhim Singh proposed establishing a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities to strengthen disability rights in India.
While the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (2016) and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities exist, Singh argued the current "Chief Commissioner" model lacks the scale to address widespread challenges.
He further suggested creating a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities to protect disability better. This commission would:
- help make policies
- monitor government schemes
- suggest budgets
- recommend changes in laws
He said the commission should be similar to other national commissions and have independent powers to take action.
He also suggested having regional offices so people across India can easily access support.
