Deadly Fire in East Delhi Residential Building Claims 9 Lives

A tragic fire in Vivek Vihar killed nine people, including a child, after blocked exits and smoke trapped families inside the building.

In the early hours of 3 May 2026, a devastating fire tore through a four-storey residential building in Vivek Vihar while families slept. Within minutes, the building turned into a trap—iron window grills, a locked terrace, and a smoke-filled staircase blocked every escape route.

As flames spread, panic followed. Residents tried to flee, but thick smoke had already choked the narrow stairway. Entire families were trapped inside their homes, unable to make it out in time.

Among the victims were multiple members of the Jain family across different floors—nine lives lost in total, including a one-year-old child. In one heartbreaking moment, 35-year-old Nishank Jain made frantic calls between 3:50 and 4:00 AM, pleading for help. By the time his friends reached, it was too late.

Firefighters arrived with 12 engines, battling flames for nearly 2.5 hours before bringing the fire under control around 8:00 AM. Rescue teams broke doors, used ladders, and managed to save 10–15 people, many suffering from burns and severe smoke inhalation, who were rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

Bodies found in staircases, flats, and upper floors revealed the tragic reality—families had tried to escape together but were left with nowhere to go.

As stories of final calls and unanswered pleas spread online, the incident sparked outrage across the country. Questions are now being raised about fire safety violations, locked exits, and how a home turned into a deadly trap overnight.
