Gen Z vs Alcohol: Is the Industry Really Losing Billions?
Gen Z is drinking less in many Western countries, but in India, young consumers are changing how they drink rather than quitting alcohol altogether.
You may have seen viral posts claiming that Gen Z is quitting alcohol and causing huge losses for the alcohol industry. There’s some truth to this, but it’s not the full story.
In the US and Europe, studies show Gen Z is drinking less than previous generations. Many are choosing to drink less or not at all, a trend often called “sober curious.” Health awareness, mental well-being, social media, rising costs and the availability of alcohol-free options are some of the reasons behind this shift.
The alcohol industry has been affected, but Gen Z isn’t the only reason. Inflation, higher prices, changing lifestyles and reduced drinking among older generations have also contributed to slower sales in several countries.
India, however, tells a different story. Gen Z isn’t completely rejecting alcohol. More young urban Indians of legal drinking age are drinking, but their preferences are changing. Many are choosing premium drinks, cocktails, craft spirits and unique flavours, focusing on quality and experience rather than simply drinking more.
So, is Gen Z killing the alcohol industry? Not really. They may be changing how people drink, but the trend looks very different across countries.
