Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his 12th consecutive Independence Day address on 15th August from the Red Fort, setting a record with a 103-minute speech. Marking India’s 79th Independence Day, he reflected on the nation’s journey over the last decade and laid out his vision for a "Viksit Bharat" by 2047, when India completes 100 years of independence.

PM Modi’s speech revolved around themes of self-reliance, national security, economic reforms, and inclusive growth. On national security, he praised the armed forces for their courage in Operation Sindoor and their strong response to recent terror attacks. He reiterated that India will not tolerate threats from Pakistan or its nuclear rhetoric, adding that the nation has set a “new normal” against terrorism and its supporters. He also highlighted Mission Sudarshan Chakra, India’s plan to develop advanced defence systems.

On the economy, the Prime Minister spoke of reforms aimed at simplifying rules, improving transparency, and supporting entrepreneurship. He revealed that the government has already scrapped over 40,000 redundant compliances and 1,500 outdated laws. Notably, he highlighted income tax reforms, under which individuals earning up to ?12 lakh annually are exempted from tax. The shift to a faceless assessment system, he added, has reduced corruption and improved fairness.

Further, PM Modi announced the creation of a Next-Generation Reforms Task Force to streamline regulations and encourage business growth. He also promised Next-Gen GST reforms by Diwali, aimed at reducing the tax burden on essential goods. To boost employment, the Prime Minister launched the PM Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, which targets creating 3.5 crore jobs within two years. He stressed that empowering MSMEs, entrepreneurs, and startups will be central to achieving India’s long-term growth goals. On the political front, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge skipped the Red Fort ceremony, instead marking Independence Day at Indira Bhavan in Delhi. Their absence sparked criticism, with BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accusing Rahul Gandhi of putting “politics above patriotism.” PM Modi concluded by urging citizens to stay united, self-reliant, and forward-looking, envisioning an India that is stronger, modern, and ready to compete globally by 2047.
