Iran Supreme Leader Khamenei’s Funeral Takes Place After 4 Months: PM Modi Does Not Attend

Iran held Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's delayed funeral four months after his death, but fears remain that the Iran-US-Israel conflict could restart once the mourning period ends.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in an airstrike on 28 February 2026 during the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. ISH News has already released a detailed video explaining the events.

In Islam, burials usually take place within 24 hours. So why did Khamenei's funeral happen four months later?

According to reports, the funeral was delayed because of the ongoing war, serious security threats, and unstable conditions inside Iran.

The funeral ceremonies finally began on 4 July 2026 in Tehran at the Grand Mosalla. Khamenei's body and the bodies of family members who died with him were placed in coffins wrapped in the Iranian flag and kept in public view for people to pay their respects. Thousands of mourners, officials, and religious leaders attended.

On 5 July, massive funeral prayers were held. Large crowds gathered, with many people crying, beating their chests in mourning, and chanting slogans, including some directed against the United States and Israel.

One major question remained unanswered: Where was Mojtaba Khamenei?

Mojtaba, who became Iran's new leader in March, has not appeared in public since taking power. He even missed his wife's memorial service. Reports claim he was injured in the same airstrike and may have suffered leg injuries and facial disfigurement, raising questions about his health and leadership.

The main funeral procession began on 6 July, with the coffins carried through the streets of Tehran and other cities. Authorities closed roads, imposed airspace restrictions, and declared a period of national mourning. The ceremonies are also being held across five cities in two countries, with plans to take Khamenei's remains to important Shiite religious sites in Iraq.

The final burial is scheduled for 9 July at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, Khamenei's birthplace.

More than 100 countries sent representatives to the funeral. However, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend, though senior officials from both countries were present.

Despite the funeral, the conflict may not be over. US President Donald Trump recently said, "We knocked the hell out of Iran" and claimed that the US had given Iran "a week off for the funeral." His remarks have fuelled speculation that military action could resume once the mourning ceremonies end.

For now, the ceasefire appears to be temporary, and tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel remain high.
