Jharkhand Student Protest: 3 Exams Cancelled, JPSC Members Resign
Jharkhand students continue protesting over alleged exam irregularities despite the government accepting most of their demands and cancelling three exams.
The Jharkhand government recruitment exam controversy has led to large protests by students in Ranchi. Thousands of students are demanding fair and transparent exams conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
The protest began on 22 July 2026. Students raised concerns about alleged paper leaks, cheating, delays in exams and results, and a lack of transparency. They said such problems can hurt students who spend years preparing for government jobs.
Students are especially demanding a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities, cancellation or review of exams where problems are found, timely results and strict action against those involved in cheating or paper leaks.
The protest became bigger after the JPSC Civil Services Main Examination, scheduled from 25 to 27 July, was postponed. This came after the Jharkhand CID arrested five people, including JPSC Deputy Examination Controller Shweta Gupta, in connection with alleged exam irregularities.
Students gathered at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium and marched towards Albert Ekka Chowk. Some also started a hunger strike. Student leader Devendra Nath Mahato began an indefinite fast, saying the protest would continue until their demands were addressed.
The opposition BJP also supported the students and criticised the state government over the recruitment process. The government said the allegations were being investigated and promised action according to the law.
Later, after around six hours of talks with student representatives, the Jharkhand government agreed to cancel three examinations. It also agreed to involve the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate alleged financial irregularities linked to the 14th JPSC exam.
Three JPSC members also resigned on the same day. Higher and Technical Education Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu said the government had accepted around 98% of the students' demands.
However, the protesters said they were not ready to end the agitation. They are still demanding cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination and a CBI investigation into all alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC exams.
