Lucknow: Deaf Student Found Hanging in Hostel Room

A deaf student of the Dr. Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University in Lucknow allegedly killed herself by hanging. After her death, her fellow students claimed that some teachers harassed her and demanded action against the university officials.The deaf girl, Anjali Yadav, who is a student of B.Ed Special Education (Hearing Impairment), was found hanging from the ceiling of her hostel room on 3rd September.

Around 8pm, when other students of the hostel were going to the mess for dinner, they spotted the student hanging from the window. They broke open the hostel room and informed university officials about it. The warden sent her to Lok Bandhu Hospital in Lucknow, where doctors declared her dead. Students revealed that students, including Anjali, got their BEd (HI) second semester results on 2nd September. Anjali was depressed after the results came. Students allege that Anjali was good in studies, she has been perpetually failed.

Soon after her death, university students began a protest, which continued till 4th September. University students blocked the highway in front of the university’s gate. They were joined by the students of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University and Lucknow University at the protest site in solidarity. Members of the Students’ Federation of India, BBAU unit have been a part of the sit-in and are lending their support to the protesting students. The protesters claimed that Anjali Yadav was harassed by some teachers. The students demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the chairmanship of a former Supreme Court judge to probe the case. They also demanded the expulsion of university vice chancellor, proctor, controller of examinations and the registrar. They further demanded immediate compensation and government jobs for one of the members of the victim girl’s family.

One of the protesters said, “Out of 20 students in her batch, 15 had failed. Some students even alleged that a teacher deliberately awarded poor marks to students, and demanded an FIR to be lodged against the teacher. According to students, the university does not have an adequate number of interpreters for special classes and demands better facilities. They also demanded that the course should be completed on time and not completed in haste. The students demanded that examination should be conducted only after completing the syllabus within the stipulated time limit.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Kakori Ashutosh Kumar said, “The body was sent for postmortem and the matter is being investigated.” The girl’s family has not submitted any complaint regarding the incident to the police, Kumar added. Also, according to several sources, Anjali’s brother Pradeep is also Deaf. He also works in the same Shakuntala University. Father Mahesh Yadav said that Anjali was very happy in the past. She was disappointed since she failed. DSMNRU University Registrar Amit Kumar Singh said, “The incident is very unfortunate, and we have formed an internal committee to investigate the matter.” On the student protest, Amit Kumar SIngh said, “Only a few students are protesting outside the gate of the University.
