Mexican Navy Ship Crashes into Brooklyn Bridge

On May 17, 2025, a Mexican Navy training ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York after losing power. Two crew members died and 22 others were injured in the accident.

A big training ship of the Mexican Navy named Cuauhtémoc crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City on the evening of 17th May.

The accident happened around 8:30 PM when the ship was leaving the South Street Seaport in Manhattan and started moving along the East River.

The Cuauhtémoc is around 300 feet long and has three tall masts. It was built in 1982 and is used to train sailors. It had been docked in New York from 13th to 17th May as part of a special programme called “Consolidation of the Independence of Mexico 2025”, celebrating 200 years of Mexican independence.

The ship started its journey on 6th April 2025 and plans to visit 22 ports in 15 countries in 254 days to spread peace and friendship. Before reaching New York, it had already visited Kingston (Jamaica), Havana (Cuba), and Cozumel (Mexico).

On 17th May, while leaving the port, the ship was being guided by a tugboat (a small, strong boat that helps bigger ships). But soon after moving, the Cuauhtémoc lost power and started moving backwards without control.

Due to strong river currents and wind, the crew could not stop the ship, and it crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge. The crash damaged the tall masts of the ship, but officers confirmed that the bridge itself was not seriously harmed.

There were 277 people on board at the time. Sadly, two crew members died, and 22 others were injured, including three who were seriously hurt.

Officials are now investigating what went wrong and how the accident happened.
