Mumbai Monsoon Turns Deadly: Chawl Collapse Kills 6, Red Alert Issued
Mumbai's relentless monsoon has turned deadly, with a building collapse, severe flooding, and widespread disruption as authorities issue a Red Alert.
Just last week, ISH News reported on the tragic incident where a tree fell on a school bus in Mumbai, claiming the life of an 11-year-old student.
Now, relentless monsoon rains have brought fresh devastation across the city.
On the night of 5 July, a four-storey chawl in Janta Nagar, Mankhurd collapsed after days of heavy rainfall. Six people lost their lives, including five children aged between 2 and 14 years and a 32-year-old woman. One person was rescued with injuries as emergency teams worked through the night to search the debris.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai and nearby areas, while the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has warned of extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds.
As a precaution, schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune have been closed.
The rain has also disrupted daily life. Waterlogging has slowed local train services, landslides affected the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, and several flights have been delayed or diverted.
Meanwhile, a dramatic video of a Vande Bharat Express cutting through flooded tracks near Kanjur Marg has gone viral. Despite the striking visuals, railway officials have reported no operational issues linked to the incident.
With more rain expected, authorities are urging people to stay indoors, avoid flooded roads, unstable structures, trees and electric poles, and travel only if absolutely necessary.
