Weekly News Roundup: Top Stories Of The Week | 2 August | Deaf News
This week's top stories from India and around the world.
The fifth week of July saw several major news stories from across India, including updates on high-profile investigations, a shocking case of violence against a child, an inspiring sporting achievement, and a disturbing case of animal cruelty.
A fresh update has come in the death case of former model Twisha Sharma. Twisha was found dead at her in-laws' home in Bhopal in May. Her family had accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and questioned whether her death was really a suicide. Now, the AIIMS Delhi medical board has submitted its forensic report to the CBI. According to the report, the skin tissue found on the belt that was allegedly used for hanging matched the injury marks on Twisha's neck. The investigation is still going on. Twisha's husband and mother-in-law remain under arrest while the CBI continues its probe.
In another shocking incident, an 11-month-old baby girl suffered a skull fracture after her father allegedly threw her during her naming ceremony in Bengaluru. Police said the man became angry because of delays during the event. He also allegedly assaulted his wife and father-in-law. The baby was rushed to hospital and is receiving treatment. Doctors have said that she is now out of danger. Police are investigating the case.
India also celebrated a historic sporting achievement this week. On 27 July, 40-year-old Sharmila Dhankar won India's first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in women's para-athletics Shot Put F57 at Glasgow, Scotland. She achieved a season-best throw of 9.81 metres. Sharmila's victory is even more inspiring because she survived years of domestic violence. Fourteen years ago, she was stripped, thrown out of her home, and left alone to raise her two daughters. After winning the gold medal, Sharmila said she hopes her journey encourages others to never give up, no matter how difficult life becomes.
A disturbing case of animal cruelty also came to light from Ambernath in Maharashtra. A CCTV video that went viral on social media showed a man allegedly pushing a stray cat from the 12th floor of an apartment building. The incident caused widespread anger, with many people demanding strict action against the accused. Reports said the cat died after the fall. Police have started an investigation into the matter.
