Who Was the Co-Pilot Who Attacked Captain Smit Machchhar?

New details have emerged about the attack on Captain Smit Machchhar, including the identity and background of his co-pilot.

More Details Emerge About the Attack on Captain Smit Machchhar

ISH News earlier reported how Captain Smit Machchhar was seriously injured after being attacked by his co-pilot during a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Despite his injuries, the aircraft was safely diverted to Saudi Arabia, saving the lives of everyone on board.

More details about the incident and the co-pilot have now emerged.

Who Was the Co-Pilot?

The co-pilot has been identified as Hamam al-Hammami, an Omani citizen who was born in the UAE.

Reports say Oman had previously stopped him from flying because of concerns about his extremist views. He later worked with several airlines, including Oman Air, before joining Flydubai around eight months before the incident. Investigators are now examining his background and how he was allowed to operate the flight.

What Happened Inside the Cockpit?

According to investigators, al-Hammami attacked Machchhar with a crash axe, an emergency tool kept inside the cockpit.

Machchhar suffered serious injuries and heavy blood loss. The aircraft also lost a large amount of altitude during the incident.

Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to reach and open the cockpit door. Crew members, passengers and other pilots then helped control the situation. The aircraft was eventually diverted and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. All 174 passengers survived.

Investigators Look Into Possible Terror Plot

Authorities are investigating the incident as an alleged terrorist attack.

According to reports, investigators believe al-Hammami had planned the attack before joining Flydubai and had specifically looked for flights travelling to Tel Aviv. His previous travel, online activity and aviation career are now being examined as part of the investigation.

Captain Smit Speaks to PM Modi

While recovering, Machchhar spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone. He explained that he realised something was seriously wrong when the aircraft began descending. Despite fighting for his own life, he knew he had to protect everyone on board.

Machchhar also spoke about the medical treatment he received after landing in Saudi Arabia and thanked the people who helped him.

Praises and Honours

Machchhar has received praise from leaders in India, Israel and the UAE for his actions.

The Gujarat government has announced the Vishisht Gujarat Garima Award, along with a Rs.25 lakh cash prize, for his bravery. Mankind Pharma has also announced Rs.1 crore in financial support for Machchhar and his family. There have also been calls for him to receive the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award.

The investigation into the attack and the co-pilot's background is still continuing.
