13-Year-Old Girl Hired for Domestic Help Rescued From Inside a Bed in Guwahati
A young girl in Guwahati was rescued from severe abuse after being hidden inside a bed box by her employers, who had kept her as a child domestic worker for six years.
A disturbing incident from Guwahati, Assam, has gone viral after a video showed a young girl being rescued from inside a bed storage box.
Around six years ago, when the girl was only about six years old, she was sent by her family to work as a domestic helper in a house in the Panjabari area of Guwahati. The aim was to help her earn money to support her family. Since then, she had been living in the house and doing household work every day. She did not attend school during this period.
The employers were identified as Baharul Laskar and his wife Amrin Laskar. The girl stayed with them and worked under their supervision for nearly six years.
In late January 2026, neighbours became suspicious after noticing signs that the child was being mistreated. They informed the Child Helpline, which alerted child welfare authorities and the police.
On 1 February 2026, a joint team of Assam Police and the Child Welfare Department reached the house to rescue the child. When officials arrived, the couple claimed that the girl had already returned to her home in Silchar. However, during the search, they allegedly tried to hide her.
First, they attempted to keep her inside a bathroom. When officials continued searching, Amrin reportedly hid the girl inside a bed storage box, placed a mattress over it, and asked a family member to lie on top. The child was locked inside the small compartment for nearly 25 to 30 minutes with very little air.
Officials eventually lifted the mattress and found the girl inside the box. She appeared frightened, weak, and traumatised. Injury marks and scratches were visible on her face and body, suggesting long-term physical abuse.
After the rescue, she was taken for immediate medical and psychological care. She has now been shifted to a Child Care Institute, where she is receiving treatment, counselling, and protection.
A formal complaint has been filed at Dispur Police Station. A case has been registered against Baharul Laskar and Amrin Laskar under child protection and child labour laws. Police said the girl was often beaten if she made mistakes or could not complete her work properly.
Authorities are continuing the investigation to find out how the child was hired, the role of her guardians, and whether any agents or middlemen were involved.
