Agniveers in Army Denied Marriage Until Permanent Posting

The Agnipath Scheme requires Agniveers to remain unmarried during service and selection. The rule aims to maintain discipline but has raised concerns among youth and families.

This topic is trending widely on social media, and many young people and families are confused about it. That is why ISH News is explaining it in a clear and simple way.

The Agnipath Scheme was introduced by the Indian Government in June 2022 for recruitment into the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. Under this system, young men and women between about 17½ and 21 years are recruited as Agniveers for a fixed period of four years. ISH News has already shared videos explaining this scheme in detail.

After completing four years of service, most Agniveers are released. Only up to 25 percent from each batch may be selected for permanent service. This selection depends on performance, physical and medical fitness, written exams, discipline, conduct, and other criteria decided by the Army.

One rule under this scheme has recently become a major talking point — the marriage rule. According to official recruitment terms, Agniveers must be unmarried at the time of joining. They also sign a declaration stating they will not marry during the four-year service period. This rule has existed since the scheme began.

If an Agniveer gets married during these four years, the Army can discharge them from service. Reports also say that after four years, Agniveers who wish to become permanent soldiers must remain unmarried during the selection period. If they marry during this time, they may become ineligible for permanent induction.

In practice, this means an Agniveer must stay unmarried until receiving the permanent appointment letter. The Army says this rule helps maintain discipline, focus, and readiness. Supporters agree, while critics say it affects personal freedom and increases stress.
