The incident began when a man was leaving a park with his young son. As they approached the parking area, his son started running, forcing him to chase after him. During the rush, his earbud case slipped out of his hoodie pocket and hit the ground. The case opened, sending his left white Bose earbud flying into the gravel.

The man spent around 10 minutes searching for it but could not find it. The problem was that the white earbud blended in with the hundreds of light-coloured stones. The sun was also setting, making the search even more difficult.

How Did ChatGPT Help Find the Earbud?

The man took a photograph of the gravel and uploaded it to ChatGPT. He asked the chatbot to help locate his missing white Bose earbud. However, ChatGPT could not identify the earbud with confidence in the first photograph. Instead of giving a definite answer, it asked him to take closer photographs of the area.

The man followed the instructions and uploaded additional pictures. After examining the closer images, ChatGPT identified what appeared to be the missing earbud. It pointed to a spot towards the left side of the picture, slightly above the middle.

The chatbot also returned an image with a red circle marking the suspected location. It explained that the white plastic body and grey silicone part of the earbud could be seen between the stones. The man checked the suggested spot and found his missing earbud.

According to his Reddit post, the entire process, from uploading the photographs to finding the earbud, took less than five minutes.

How Can ChatGPT Help With Everyday Problems?

This incident shows how ChatGPT's image-understanding feature can be useful beyond writing, studies and office work.
