Man Dies After Gutka-Spitting Accident Near 11,000-Volt Wire

A man in Madhya Pradesh died after reportedly coming into contact with an 11,000-volt power line while spitting gutka from his third-floor balcony. The incident has also raised concerns about high-voltage wires passing dangerously close to homes.

How Did the Fatal Accident Happen?

The incident took place around 1 pm on 23 October in Ganj Basoda, in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha district.

Prabhulal Gupta, a mason who lived in a rented house, was standing on the balcony when he spat out gutka. Reports say he came into contact with an overhead 11,000-volt electricity line and suffered a fatal electric shock. Reports differ on his age, placing him at either 60 or 65. He had reportedly lived in the area for around 10 years.

Police reached the scene after receiving information about the incident. They registered a case and began an investigation.

Residents Say They Had Raised Safety Concerns

The incident has raised questions about the safety of high-tension wires near residential buildings.

Local residents said the electricity line passed dangerously close to homes. They alleged that concerns had been raised with electricity officials before the incident.

Gupta’s landlord, Padma Chidhar, said she had approached electricity officials several times and asked them to move the line away from the building. According to her, officials had assured her that the line would be shifted, but the work had not been completed.

These claims have not, by themselves, established whether official negligence contributed to the death.

Why Are High-Tension Wires Dangerous?

An 11,000-volt power line can cause severe burns or death. Under certain conditions, electricity can also jump through the air from a live conductor to a nearby person or object.

The exact circumstances of Gupta’s death remain subject to investigation. The incident has renewed concerns about the risks posed by high-voltage power lines near homes and the need to address reported safety hazards.
