New SIM Rule May Log You Out of WhatsApp and Telegram
India’s new SIM Binding rule will make messaging apps work only when the linked SIM card is inserted in the device.
The government has introduced a major new rule called SIM Binding, which will change the way many popular communication apps work in India. This includes WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat, ShareChat, JioChat, Aratta and Josh. Under this rule, these apps will only work if the registered SIM card is actively inserted in the device. If the SIM card is removed or deactivated, the apps will automatically stop working.
For users who access WhatsApp Web or similar web versions, the system will log them out every six hours. To continue, they will need to scan a QR code again using the app. The Department of Telecommunications has ordered all platforms to implement SIM binding within 90 days and submit a compliance report within 120 days.
Right now, users can log into WhatsApp or Telegram once and continue using them even if they remove the SIM, change SIM cards or use only Wi-Fi. The government says this flexibility has created a major security loophole. Many cybercriminals outside India use Indian mobile numbers to commit fraud by logging in through old or inactive SIM-linked accounts. Because the SIM is not physically present, it becomes harder to trace their location.
With SIM binding, apps will stop working the moment the SIM is removed, closing this loophole. For most ordinary users, daily experience will stay the same, except for occasional re-logins. However, people who travel abroad, use dual-SIM phones, e-SIMs or shared devices may face difficulties.
Experts remain divided. Supporters believe it will reduce scams. Critics feel it may only trace fake identities and cause inconvenience. Still, this is one of the biggest changes to messaging apps in India and will affect millions soon.
