Russia has made a big move in response to growing tensions with the US. The country has officially withdrawn from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty — an agreement once signed by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and US President Ronald Reagan to ban land-based missiles with a range of 500–5,500 km. The treaty had long been seen as a symbol of peace, but its end signals a dangerous shift in global politics.

The US had already pulled out of the treaty in 2019 under Donald Trump, accusing Russia of violations. Still, Moscow had promised not to deploy such weapons unless Washington did so first. Now, with Trump sending nuclear submarines near Russia and NATO placing nuclear weapons in Eastern Europe, Russia says it has “no choice” but to restore military balance. Officials have warned the US to “be very, very careful with nuclear rhetoric,” and experts believe Russia may soon place its own nuclear submarines near American waters.

Adding to the tension, Russian political thinker Aleksandr Dugin — often called “Putin’s Brain” — criticised Trump, calling him “totally mad” and expressing disappointment after once admiring him. Although India has not officially reacted, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova hinted that BRICS partners, including India, share similar views against US actions.
