Richa Ghosh: From Broken Windows to Breaking Records
From Siliguri’s small lanes Richa Ghosh turned every challenge into power. Her fearless game and family’s sacrifices made her one of India’s brightest cricket stars
Richa Ghosh grew up in Siliguri, West Bengal, in a family of simple means but big dreams. Her father, Manabendra Ghosh, was her first coach and constant support, while her mother, Swapna Ghosh, stood quietly behind every decision, holding the family together.
At just four and a half years old, Richa picked up a cricket bat and refused to put it down. When her father suggested table tennis, she firmly said no cricket was her passion. Unlike many parents, Manabendra never stopped her from hitting big shots, even if it meant broken windows at home. He wanted her to play bold cricket, fearless and free.
While coaches worked on her technique, her father trained her to believe in her power. Richa became the first girl to join the Baghajatin Athletic Club, where she played against boys and built her strength, confidence, and resilience.
Her father made a huge sacrifice by shutting down his business in Siliguri to move with her to Kolkata for training. They lived simply, but never lost focus.
Richa’s dedication soon brought results. She made her T20I debut at just 16 during the 2020 Women’s World Cup final and went on to become India’s full-time wicketkeeper. Her fearless batting caught attention in the Women’s Premier League, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru bought her for ?1.90 crore.
In 2025, she became a key part of India’s World Cup victory, scoring a quick 34 runs in the final. From broken windows to world glory, Richa’s story is proof that belief, courage, and hard work can change everything.
