Rohit Sharma Says Goodbye to Test Cricket
Rohit Sharma has retired from Test cricket with pride, ending a memorable chapter while continuing to play ODIs for India.
CORRECTION: It is incorrectly mentioned in the video that Rohit Sharma has scored 18 centuries and 12 half-centuries in Test cricket. The correct number is 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries in Test cricket.
On the morning of 7 May 2025, cricket fans across India woke up to an emotional post from Rohit Sharma. In a short Instagram message, he announced his retirement from Test cricket.
Rohit shared that playing Test cricket for India was a dream come true. He thanked his teammates, coaches, the BCCI, and especially the fans who always supported him.
Rohit played 66 Test matches for India and scored over 4,300 runs, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. His highest score was 212. Known for his elegant shots and calm nature, he became India’s Test captain in early 2022 after Virat Kohli stepped down.
As captain, Rohit led India in 24 Tests — winning 12, losing 9, and drawing 3. Under his leadership, India performed well both at home and abroad.
This retirement comes just months after he stepped away from T20 Internationals, right after leading India to win the 2024 T20 World Cup — a perfect ending to his T20 career.
However, this is not the end. Rohit will continue playing ODIs (One Day Internationals), where he remains a fan favourite and a strong performer.
Many reports say that poor form in the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia may have influenced his decision. In the first Test, Jasprit Bumrah led India to victory when Rohit was on leave. After his return, India lost matches, and sources suggest he was unlikely to be picked for the upcoming five-Test series against England starting 20 June 2025.
Many people believe Rohit’s decision to retire was graceful and timely, keeping India’s future in mind.
It will surely feel strange to watch a Test match without Rohit in his white jersey. But every player must move on one day, and Rohit has done it with pride.
From hitting smooth pull shots to leading India with calmness, Rohit gave fans many unforgettable moments in Test cricket. He was not just a batsman — he was a leader, a fighter, and a joy to watch.
As he continues his journey in ODIs, fans everywhere are saying — Thank you, Hitman. We’ll miss you in Test cricket.
