Sanju Samson to be Banned from T20 World Cup 2026 Semi-Finals?

Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97 powered India into the T20 World Cup semi-finals, but his emotional helmet-throw celebration has sparked debate over possible ICC action.

Sanju Samson has become the hero of the nation after playing a stunning match-winning knock against West Indies in the ICC T20 World Cup at Eden Gardens.

In what was almost a virtual quarter-final for India, Samson scored an unbeaten 97 off just 50 balls and guided India to a thrilling five-wicket win. West Indies had set a tough target of 196 after scoring 195 runs. India chased it down by reaching 199 for 5 in 19.2 overs, securing a place in the semi-finals.

The pressure was high as it was India’s final Super 8 match. Early wickets of Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan increased tension, but Samson took control of the chase. His innings included 12 fours and four sixes, and he was named Player of the Match. The knock is being called one of India’s finest chases in T20 World Cup history.

After hitting the winning boundary, Samson celebrated emotionally by removing his helmet and throwing it on the ground before raising his hands to thank God. The celebration quickly went viral and led to debate over whether it violated the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct.

According to ICC rules, players are not allowed to misuse cricket equipment, including helmets. Such actions can fall under a Level 1 offence, which may lead to a warning, a fine or demerit points. Earlier in the same tournament, Scotland’s George Munsey received one demerit point for throwing his helmet after dismissal, which has increased speculation about possible action against Samson.

However, many experts believe a serious punishment is unlikely, as match referees usually consider the intention behind the act. Celebrations done out of joy are often treated more lightly than actions done in anger.

The victory also brought emotional scenes in the Indian camp. Captain Suryakumar Yadav was seen bowing to Samson as a mark of respect for his match-winning performance.

For now, fans are eagerly waiting to see whether Samson will feature in the semi-final clash against England, as his presence could be crucial for India’s title hopes.
