Why Is Everyone Talking About IAS Officer Tukaram Mundhe?

IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe is gaining attention for his strict enforcement of food safety rules and his focus on making laws apply equally to everyone.

Remember our recent ISH News story? Maharashtra recently banned the sale, free distribution and advertising of junk food and sugary drinks within 50 metres of schools.

Leading the implementation is IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe, who has now become one of India’s most talked-about civil servants.

A 2005-batch Maharashtra cadre IAS officer, Mundhe has been transferred 25 times in 21 years. He has served as District Collector, Municipal Commissioner, Transport Commissioner, Development Commissioner, Secretary of the Disability Welfare Department, and now Commissioner of Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

His strict approach and refusal to compromise on rules have often made headlines.

Since taking charge of the FDA, Mundhe has ordered inspections across Maharashtra, targeting restaurants, hotels, food factories and shops for violations.

His strict enforcement recently drew attention during a Bombay High Court hearing. The Court questioned whether finding two insects in a kitchen was enough to suspend a hotel’s licence, observing, “Be realistic. We are in India. There are mosquitoes.”

The Court also questioned whether inspections were focusing only on private establishments and said government-run canteens should be inspected too.

Mundhe’s team acted quickly and inspected the Bombay High Court canteen itself. One canteen was reportedly found operating without the required licence and was ordered to stop operations until it complied with the rules.

The move went viral, with many praising Mundhe for showing that the law should apply equally to everyone.

His supporters admire his discipline, honesty and willingness to take difficult decisions despite frequent transfers. Critics, however, say his approach can sometimes be too strict.

Before joining the FDA, Mundhe served as Secretary of Maharashtra’s Disability Welfare Department, where he worked on welfare schemes, accessibility and action against misuse of disability certificates.

Many persons with disabilities, including members of the Deaf community, appreciated his willingness to listen to their concerns and focus on implementing welfare measures.

Whether praised or criticised, Tukaram Mundhe continues to attract attention for his uncompromising approach to enforcing the law.
