The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction was held on 12th and 13th February 2022 in Bengaluru. This year 10 teams will be playing in the IPL. The 2 new teams are Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. The 10 teams bought 204 players including 67 foreign players after spending a total of Rs 551.70 crore at the mega-auction. Ishan Kishan remained the biggest buy of IPL as Mumbai Indians paid a whopping Rs 15.25 crore to keep him. An intense bidding war was witnessed for Deepak Chahar, with 4 teams fighting to buy him. He was eventually kept at CSK for Rs 14 crore. Liam Livingstone at 11.5 Crore was the most expensive overseas player. Shockingly, star batsman Suresh Raina did not find any takers and he was left unsold. Avesh Khan became the most expensive uncapped player in the history of IPL auction as he was sold for Rs 10 crore to Lucknow Super Giants. Uncapped means those players who have not represented or those who have not debuted for their national team.

11 players were sold for above Rs 10 Crore each and 108 players were sold for more than 1 crore each. After the intense bidding, fans are now excitedly waiting for the IPL to commence. However, an undue incident occurred during the auction on 1st day - 12th February 2022. The cricketing world were left shocked midway as auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsed on stage whilst overseeing the auction.

The TV cameras showed the 62-year-old lying on the floor before quickly panning away and pausing coverage. Shah Rukh Khan was not present for the auction. However his children Suhana Khan and Aryan Khan were present there but were mere spectators and the bidding was done by the company representatives. When the incident of Hugh Edmeades falling happened, an image of shocked Suhana Khan went viral on social media. Following the collapse it has been reported that the fall came around due to a sudden drop in blood pressure, normally after standing up too quickly. Reports have suggested that Edmeades only suffered from ‘dizziness’, but was taken to hospital for tests. The Indian Premier League released a statement: “Mr. Hugh Edmeades, the IPL Auctioneer, had an unfortunate fall. The medical team attended to him immediately after the incident & he is stable. Mr. Charu Sharma continued with the Auction proceedings today.”
