Two Schoolgirls Brutally Attacked in Haryana and Andhra Pradesh; Questions Raised Over School Safety
Two schoolgirls were seriously injured in separate attacks inside government schools in Haryana and Andhra Pradesh. The incidents have raised serious concerns about student safety and security inside educational institutions.
In Haryana's Panchkula district, an eight-year-old student allegedly attacked a six-year-old girl inside a classroom. In Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district, a 21-year-old man allegedly entered a school with an electric chainsaw and attacked a 15-year-old student.
Here is what happened in both incidents.
Six-Year-Old Girl Attacked Inside Panchkula School
On October 28, 2026, a six-year-old kindergarten student was seriously injured after an eight-year-old Class 3 student allegedly attacked her inside Shaheed Major Anuj Rajput Government Model Sanskriti Senior Secondary School in Sector 20, Panchkula, Haryana.
According to the complaint, the boy told the girl that her father was waiting for her and took her to an empty classroom on the first floor. He allegedly grabbed her by the hair, repeatedly banged her head against a desk and attacked her with a brick and a flower pot. He also kicked her several times. The attack was captured on the school's CCTV cameras.
The girl was left unconscious and seriously injured inside the classroom. When her family arrived to take her home, they could not find her. They searched the school and eventually found her lying unconscious inside a locked classroom.
She was first taken to a private hospital in Panchkula. She was later shifted to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh for further treatment. She suffered serious head and facial injuries, including a fracture in her nose. She was initially admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The girl regained consciousness on November 1. By November 2, she was showing signs of physical recovery, although her family said she continued to experience fear and psychological trauma.
Eight-Year-Old Student Sent to Place of Safety
Since the accused student is eight years old, the matter is being handled through the juvenile justice system.
On October 31, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Panchkula directed that the boy be sent to an Observation Home in Ambala as a place of safety while the inquiry continues. A mental health assessment was also initiated to understand his condition and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The next hearing before the board was scheduled for November 4.
Principal and Two Teachers Suspended in Haryana
Following the incident, the Haryana Education Department suspended two Junior Basic Training (JBT) teachers, Simranjeet Kaur and Pooja Rani, on October 31.
The school principal, Neelu, was suspended on November 1. Police also registered a case against the principal, the class in-charge and the school watchman over alleged negligence. The investigation is looking into the school's supervision arrangements, security measures and the circumstances that allowed the girl to remain injured inside a locked classroom. Haryana Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda said the government would bear the girl's medical expenses.
The state government also formed an inquiry committee and ordered a safety audit of schools across Haryana. The committee will examine CCTV monitoring, staff responsibilities, student supervision and emergency response arrangements.
PGIMER Director Professor Vivek Lal also confirmed that the institute would provide the girl's treatment free of cost.
Teenager Attacked With Chainsaw Inside Andhra Pradesh School
In a separate incident, a 15-year-old Class 10 student was seriously injured after a 21-year-old man allegedly attacked her with an electric chainsaw inside a government school in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh.
The incident took place on October 31, 2026, at Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu, during school hours. The accused, identified as Hemanth, allegedly entered the classroom carrying a running chainsaw and attacked the girl in front of other students and teachers.
Another girl was also injured when she tried to protect her friend. The main victim suffered severe injuries to her face, head, neck and abdomen. Her right hand was severed in the attack. Both injured students were taken to Anantapur Government General Hospital.
Doctors treated the seriously injured girl and worked to control her bleeding before shifting her to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru for advanced treatment. She was transported through a green corridor, a special route that helps emergency vehicles reach hospitals quickly by reducing traffic delays.
Girl Undergoes Surgery at Bengaluru Hospital
At Manipal Hospital, the girl underwent extensive surgery involving orthopaedic and plastic surgery teams.
On November 1, Andhra Pradesh Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh visited the hospital and spoke to the doctors and the girl's family. He said the necessary surgeries had been completed successfully, but the next 48 hours would be important for her recovery.
On November 2, Lokesh shared another update, confirming that both orthopaedic and plastic surgeries had been successful. The girl was shifted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for close monitoring and continued ventilator support.
Later on November 2, Lokesh reported that her condition was steadily improving. She was conscious and had met her mother. Doctors were planning to remove her ventilator support later that evening. The second injured student received treatment at Anantapur Government General Hospital.
Who Is Hemanth? What Was the Reported Motive?
According to preliminary police information, Hemanth was a relative of the girl. Some reports identified him as her maternal uncle.
Police said he had allegedly been harassing the girl for several months in the name of love. He had reportedly proposed to her, but she rejected his advances and asked him to stay away. She had also reportedly threatened to inform her parents about his behaviour.
Investigators suspect that her rejection was the reason behind the attack.
According to preliminary accounts of the incident, Hemanth entered the school by following an autorickshaw that was allowed through the gate. A teacher also said that repairs were taking place at the school and staff initially mistook him for a worker.
Police collected CCTV footage and statements from witnesses as part of the investigation.
Police Shoot Hemanth During Search Near Atmakur Forest
After the October 31 attack, Hemanth fled from the school, and police launched a search operation to find him.
On November 1, police tracked him down near the Atmakur forest area in Anantapur district. According to Anantapur Superintendent of Police P. Jagadeesh, Hemanth allegedly resisted arrest, threw stones at police personnel and attempted to attack them with a knife.
Police initially fired warning shots. When he allegedly continued attacking the team and injured a police inspector, officers fired six rounds at him. Hemanth sustained bullet injuries and was taken to Anantapur Government General Hospital for treatment. His condition was reported to be critical.
Police said they would question him when his medical condition allowed.
Counselling Arranged for Students After Andhra Pradesh Attack
Following the incident, Andhra Pradesh Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh announced a mental health support programme for affected students.
A team of 20 mental health counsellors was deployed to visit the homes of all 32 students from Class 10-A, where the attack took place. The counsellors were also assigned to support girl students studying in Classes 8, 9 and 10. The programme aims to help students and their families deal with fear and emotional trauma following the attack.
Both incidents have raised serious questions about how schools protect children during school hours. They have also highlighted the importance of proper supervision, security arrangements and support for students after traumatic incidents.
