A Pakistani social media user sparked outrage after making a racist comment about Indian President Droupadi Murmu’s skin colour.
The comment was posted under a video shared by news agency ANI on X on 12 September 2026, showing President Murmu meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New Delhi. An account named “Cyborg”, which has a Pakistan flag in its bio, wrote that they had to turn their phone brightness up to 100% to see her face. The same account had earlier made another derogatory comment about President Murmu, linking her appearance to the Partition of India.
President Murmu, a member of the Santhal tribal community from Odisha, is India’s first President from a tribal community and the second woman to hold the office. She is also the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces.
Many Indians responded to the post, highlighting her journey from a tribal community in Odisha to the country’s highest constitutional office. Some users also responded with sarcastic comments of their own.
This is not the first controversy over comments about President Murmu. In 2022, Congress leader Ajoy Kumar said she represented a “very evil philosophy of India”, though he later clarified that his criticism was directed at the BJP-led NDA’s politics.
In 2025, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi referred to President Murmu as a “poor thing” after her address to Parliament. The President’s office called the remark “unfortunate and entirely avoidable.”
From political remarks to racist trolling online, the incidents have renewed conversations around how public figures and ordinary people continue to face discrimination based on their appearance and background.
