Deaf Youth Commit Suicide in Telangana

Two Deaf individuals have committed suicide by setting themselves ablaze in Nalgonda district in Telangana.

Two friends, both of whom Deaf, committed suicide by setting themselves ablaze in Haliya in Nalgonda district in Telangana early morning on thursday 10th September.  This news has shocked the Deaf Community. N Ashwini,20, is a native of Nizamabad & Sheikh Mastanvali,27, native of Guntur district, both were colleagues in a company in Hyderabad. They were both living in different rooms in Mehdipatnam. Mastanvali and Ashwini were missing since monday 7th Sept 2020. When Ashwini’s family members came to know that she is missing, they lodged a missing complaint in Humayun Nagar police station. During the investigation, police came to know that her colleague Mastanvali is also missing.

They both kept their mobile phones switched off. They visited Nagarjuna Sagar Dam  and other surrounding areas using a bike.

On Wednesday 9th September night, they turned one of their mobile phones on and recorded a selfie video, in Sign Language. They shared it with their friends on Deaf Whatsapp group. These videos have gone viral within the Deaf Community. In the video they said that no one is responsible for their death and they both are committing suicide because of their problems. When their friends tried to reach them, their phones became switched off. Around 2.30am on Thursday 10th September, the two friends shared their location on Whatsapp. Haliya sub-inspector Shiva Kumar said, “ Using the location already shared on Whatsapp, some of the members of the WhatsApp group hired a cab and reached Haliya in Nalgonda district. They found two burnt bodies. They informed the local police and we reached the spot,’’According to police, they found petrol bottles from the location and two college bags, in which police recovered two notes one mentioning the names and other information of both the boy and girl. 

In another note, without mentioning the reason, they informed that they were committing suicide. Mastanvali is already married and the girl Ashwini is unmarried. Police informed their respective family and a case was registered under section 174 (suspicious death) of CrPC. The Death of the two youths has shocked many. If you are having any negative or suicidal thoughts we urge you all to talk to your family members and friends and seek help. Making a decision suddenly is not the way to solve problems.
